Ecology of Mangroves describes the geographical distribution of mangroves with special emphasis on the Australian regions. Although the mangrove environment is a variable one, mangrove flora have successfully colonized this environment, an the book discusses thier special adaptations to high salt concentrations, their root specializations, responses to light, reproductive adaptations, and their ability to live with wind, waves and frosts. It goes on to explore the relationship between the mangroves and their environment: the physico-chemical factors which operate to modify the essential life processes within the mangrove community, such as temperature, wind and evaporation, salinity of the soil water, and drainage and aeration; parasitism, ammensalism, mutualism and competition; and plant-animal interactions.
Associated flora and fauna of mangroves are also discussed, followed by the special adaptations particular mangrove fauna develop for life in their unique environment.
A furhter chapter discusses the productivity of mangrove ecosystems with emphasis on the methods of measurement and results, factors influencing primary production, seasonal variation of tital control, the role of nutrient supply, and leaf and wood production.
The role of mangroves in estuarine ecosystems examines, among other things, the types of food chains, the flate of primary production, feeding strategies and estuarine fish communities.
The last chapter looks at the conservation of management of mangrove communities with special emphasis on specific management problems such as waste discharge and foreshore development. The future of mangroves and salt marshes in Australia rests on detailed management studies and enlightened decisions to ensure that mangrove ecosystems will receive adequate protections and be used on a rational basis.
Ecology of Mangroves thus synthesises the information on the flora and fauna of mangroves to provide the most comprehensive account of mangrove ecology yet published.
