description
|
Sundarbans, the queen of the natural forests, has attracted people from the medieval period. It is the site of dangerous man-eater 'Royal Bengal Tiger', the most ferocious crocodiles, sharp-toothed sharks, poisonous snakes, beautiful deer, mangrove trees and shrubs including the Sundari (Hieritiera fomes), Rhizophroaceae, Avicenniaceae, Sonneratiaceae, and last but not the least of an enormous criss-cross of rivers and creeks.
Though a number of books have come out covering different aspects of the Sundarbans mangrove delta none of them appear to have fulfilled all the requirements of the naturalists, scientists and explorers. This title by Dr Naskar and Dr Guha Bakshi is an attempt to wipe out the long-standing informations gap much to the benefit of all concerned. It deals with about 130 plants with their botany, taxonomy, ecology, phyto-succession, economic aspects as well as agriculture and aquaculture practices in the Sundarbans tidal estuary in their overall ecological perspective.
