description Mangroves are rapidly becoming appreciated, by governments and the public, as important sources of wwd products and for their role in shoreline protection.

They are also an important factor in the secondary production of shrimp, shellfish and finfish. The Physiology and Management of Mangroves consists of 13 papers presented at the Second International Symposium on the Biology and Management of Mangroves, held at Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea in 1980.

The papers cover radioisotope studies on photosynthesis and photorespiration in Indian mangroves; gas exchange and carbon isotope ratios in photosynthesis of mangroves; from Queensland, Australia, productivity of Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza in South Africa; electron microscope studies of the salt-secreting glands of Aegiceras correlated with biophysical experiments; the role of salinity in mangrove associations in Papua New Guinea; two papers on salt regulation and the occurrence and movement of ions in mangroves; the effects of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid on the growth of Rhizophora stylosa seedlings in Australia; four papers on the management of coastal wetlands and mangroves in Indonesia, Philippines and New Zealand; and a comprehensive environmental impact prediction for a planned hydroelectric plant in Papua New Guinea.

An earlier volume entitled Biology and Ecology of Mangroves was published in 1983 and contains the remaining papers of the Port Moresby Symposium.
