Familie: Rhizophoraceae
Ceriops decandra
Flat-Leaved Spurred Mangrove
the plant can be grown in an aquarium, terrarium or pot
takes root on rocks and roots (like Anubias & Javafern)
tolerates fresh water/ brackish water as well as salt water
it filters the water (nitrates and phosphates) – whereby it improves the quality of the water
grows slowly
average seed size is 10-15cm
also grows very well in pots (needs sand, small stones or a mixture of sand and rocks/stones)
the plant can easily survive two weeks without any water, if it has previously been intensively watered.
maximum height: 4 meters
not winter proof
This type of mangrove grows as a small bush or tree to a maximum height of 4 meters and is very similar to Ceriops tagal. Their main difference are the length of the seeds.
The Flat-Leafed Spurred Mangrove is most commonly found in Australia, where related types such as Ceriops australis and Ceriops tagal can be found. This type of mangrove can furthermore be found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and India.
This type of mangrove develops so-called spreading roots, but not very strongly developed only at an approximate volume of 40-50 cm around the trunk of the tree.
Mangroves are evergreen plants and consequently they carry leaves year-round. The leaves are up to 7 cm long depending on the size of the plant and green-yellowish in color.
Small white-greenish blossoms with orange nectar, that are found as bunches at the end of branches.
The fruit is very small, usually not bigger than 1 to 2 cm and brownish in color. The long seed grows out of the fruit. The fruit is eaten in some countries.
The seeds are between 10 to 15 cm long, sometimes even 20 cm, in contrast to other types of mangroves, whose seeds are formed like cigars, these seeds are very thin (5 to 10 mm in diameter). This type of mangrove seed distinguishes itself from other seed types due to the grooves, which run through from the tip to the end of the seed; these grooves are otherwise only to be found on the seeds of Ceriops tagal. The seeds are green to yellow throughout with some possible darker coloring at the tips, from where the leaves shall appear.
The color of the trunk is light-gray to white.
This type of Mangrove often grows in grounds that have a high level of salinity, the higher the level of salinity the smaller the flat-leafed spurred mangrove remains. This mangrove type is more commonly found in the interior, close to coasts, but not directly on the coast or shore, since it would as a whole be wiped away by high and low tide. Sometimes the sand and mud functions as a ground substrate.

Height: up to 4 meters
Temperature: minimum of 15° to a maximum of 60° Celsius
Water temperature: minimum of 5° to a maximum of 40° Celsius (extreme temperatures should not last longer than a few days)
Ideal growing conditions:
30° Celsius air temperature
20° - 30° Celsius water temperature
80% to 100% humidity
80% sunlight
Mangroves grow quicker in sweet water
No frost

Construction wood used as timber wood; the branches as well as very thin trunks are used for firewood. Since this type of mangrove tree delivers very hardwood it can be used for the above mentioned purposes.
